More than 1100 children enrolled in PEACH™

News

More than 1100 children from more than 900 families across Queensland have enrolled in QUT’s free healthy lifestyle program PEACH™ (Parenting, Eating and Activity for Child Health) since its launch in September 2013.

Parents and children have been involved in 104 groups at 47 different locations, from the Gold Coast to Cairns in the north and out west to Longreach.

“We are thrilled that families across the state have participated in the program and the feedback they have provided is invaluable,” said Professor Lynne Daniels, PEACH™ program director and head of QUT’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences.

“Parents who took part in the first three waves of PEACH™ groups said that the lifestyle changes they implemented after completing the program included daily walks with their children, adding more vegetables to school lunchboxes, changing portion sizes, involving children in dinner preparation, and reducing screen time.”

Enrolments have now closed for the face-to-face PEACH™ groups, however families can access the PEACH™ Online program.

Participation in PEACH™ Online is FREE and available to all Queensland families with a primary school-aged child.

Parents can access the 10 PEACH™ Online interactive sessions at their own pace, in their own time, and re-visit a session as many times as they would like. These sessions include introductory videos, easy-to-navigate information, activities, tools and links to recipes and resources.

“PEACH™ Online is an alternative format of the PEACH™ program, designed to provide the information and support parents need to manage challenges, make healthy eating choices and be more active as a family,” Professor Daniels said.

“The sessions cover issues that families deal with on a daily basis, such as making sense of food labels, healthy lunchbox choices, and finding time for the family to be more active and cutting down on screen time.

“In joining the PEACH™ Online community, parents can interact with other parents and take part in weekly ‘live’ online chats with the program’s trained facilitator. They can also connect confidentially with the facilitator to ask questions.”

PEACH™ is delivered by QUT and funded by the Queensland Government.

Enrolments for PEACH™ Online are open until 31 August 2016, and the program needs to be completed by 30 December 2016.
